Interpol is giving its Mexican fans an epic treat this month. On Apr. 1, the popular American rock back revealed a free show at the emblematic Zócalo in Mexico City slated for Apr. 20.

“We are absolutely electric with excitement to announce that we will be playing a free concert for our Mexican fans – and fans from all over for that matter – at the Zócalo in the heart of Mexico City on Saturday April 20, 2024,” the band revealed online.

They continued: “It’s a dream for us to be able to perform in such an iconic and historic setting! We are gonna give it some ganas, so be there or be square as they say. More information to follow soon.”

Interpol joins the ongoing list of artists like Roger Waters, Rosalía, and Paul McCartney who have played at the Zócalo. Latine artists who have also performed in the historic venue include La Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos del Quinto Patio, Los Tigres del Norte, and Grupo Firme. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs currently holds the attendance record for uniting 300,000 fans at the iconic location.

Fans are excited to see their favorite band perform. A social media user wrote in Spanish: “OMG, I can’t handle that @Interpol will give a free concert in the #Zócalo of #cdmx just one day before the concert of @Madonna Thank you gods @GobCDMX  😭😭😭😭#interpol.” Another X user commented: “the only thing Interpol needed to become Mexican was to play for free in the zocalo.”

Interpol’s bond with Mexico is unmatched. Not only has the band’s vocalist Paul Banks previously vocalized his appreciation for the culture, but they’ve also made space for Mexican talent to be their opening talent in massive shows. Moreover, the band routinely plays in Mexico – so much so that it’s an inside joke when festivals reveal Interpol as a featured artist. In past years, they’ve performed at huge Mexican festivals like Corona Capital (2010 and 2019) and Vive Latino (2015), to name a few.

After their performance at the Zócalo, the band will continue their live shows in Atlanta, GA (May 2-3), Houston, TX (May 5), and San Antonio, TX (May 6).
