Grupo Firme is known to party during their concerts. But after the música mexicana group’s vocalist Eduin Caz talked about his illness on stage in 2023, it seemed like they were going to stop touring. A year later, the group revealed their plans to do one more tour before their official retirement — but it turns out this isn’t the last time we’ll see them on stage.

On Fri. (June 27), Remezcla’s music editor Alexis Hodoyán-Gastélum attended the first of two sold-out show at the Estadio GNP in Mexico City, Mexico. The second date marked — which marked the group’s ninth sold-out at that venue — was streamed live on Disney+ in Latin America, giving their audience an opportunity to tune in from their couch. It ultimately became one of the most-watched livestreams on the platform. Before the opening show, Remezcla talked to the group about Caz’s upcoming alleged retirement and whether this would be their last tour together.

“What happened was that I was sick. I had an illness in the pit of my stomach. And it was getting very complicated, and I said, ‘I wanted to have money to be able to live, to enjoy, to go out,’ he told Remezcla before the three-hour show. “But at the end of the day, I was focused on work, work, work, work, and I wasn’t enjoying it, and then I said, ‘No, well, this is no life, why am I working if I’m not really happy? And then I said, ‘Let’s go.’ I was poor all my life — that’s the reality. With what I had earned, I could be at ease, tranquilo with my children.”

He continued: “That’s what I thought because of the illness. But when I had the surgery and everything, all the guys were like, ‘What’s up, let’s do another tour.’ They were sad, you have to accept it too, to stop working every day, it’s a downer. It’s even emotional for everyone.” Caz said that he then did a posada for everyone and apologized to his band members for stopping their concerts for a year without their authorization. The result? They decided to tour again.

During the conversation, he also clarified that despite the tour’s name being “La Última Peda,” the band doesn’t plan to retire. Instead, it means that the peda will continue. And speaking about drunken nights, if you’re curious about whether they’re drinking real alcohol or not during their “La Última Peda Tour dates,” it turns out they do. “Yes, I swear on my children, who are the most sacred thing I have,” Caz told Remezcla about their on-stage drinks.

As far as the performance went, the group not only featured their hits like “Ya Supérame,” “Qué Onda Perdida,” and “El Amor de Su Vida,” but Jhonny Caz also covered songs like Ana Gabriel’s “Simplemente Amigos” and Gloria Trevi’s “Todos Me Miran” in honor of Pride Month.
