La Oreja de Van Gogh will reunite with its original lead singer Amaia Montero. The Spanish singer’s close friend let the cat out of the bag in a recent interview.
La Oreja de Van Gogh is the musical project of producer and songwriter Xabi San Martín. When he launched the pop group in 1996, Montero first served as its lead singer. Her dulcet vocals were included in the band’s most popular hit albums like 2000’s El viaje de Copperpot, 2003’s Lo Que te Conté Mientras te Hacías la Dormida, and 2006’s Guapa. In 2007, Montero decided to part ways with La Oreja de Van Gogh and was replaced by Leire Martínez. In later years, Montero released a few solo albums before leaving the spotlight. Last July, she re-emerged as a surprise guest during Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito Tour stop in Madrid. Karol G and Montero sang the band’s classic “Rosas” live together.
Last October, La Oreja de Van Gogh parted ways with Martínez. Since then, many rumors have circulated about Montero possibly reuniting with the group. Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, who is a friend of Montero’s, finally confirmed the news. While talking with the press on the red carpet at the Talía Awards, the actress revealed that Montero is returning to the band.
“She’s doing very well,” Cuervo said about Montero’s reaction to the reunion. “She’s excited. She’s very cautious, but she’s very excited and very grateful for the love everyone has shown her. When she came out with Karol G, that was a wonderful thing. Spain showed her their love and they’re going to be into [Amaia’s return], right?”
Last month, reports emerged that La Oreja de Van Gogh would record a new album and prepare a world tour with Montero. In her recent solo single “Mi Nombre,” Martínez expressed her discontent with how things ended with the group.
