Before cumbia became ubiquitous in Mexico, party-goers favored other vintage tropical rhythms like mambo, son, and cha cha cha. Knowing this, Chihuahua’s Javier Martínez Loredo, a.k.a. DJ Neber, did some much-needed reworks of some of these oldies, making them DJ-friendly and compatible to the modern dance-floors.
Mi Disco Cha Cha Cha is the title of this five-track bootleg release he just put out through the Chilean netlabel Sello Regional. These are simple, straight-forward edits, where he basically lined up the songs to hard-hitting boom-bap beats (and some drum-n-bass), naturally enhancing the inner funkiness of the tracks without disrespecting their original form. Of course they’re available for download freely and I suggest you add these to your party playlist asap.
