Carin León is putting a new spin on a classic by Johnny Cash. Today (Feb. 17), the Mexican superstar released his “Man in Black” cover as part of the launch of Apple’s MLS (Major League Soccer) Season Pass.

In the past few years, León has become a force in the regional Mexican music scene. In 2020, he broke out thanks to his sierreño cover of the classic “Tú” by Puerto Rican singer Noelia. Since then, León has released hits like “El Toxico” alongside Grupo Firme and “Cambia!” with C. Tangana and Adriel Favela. He is currently charting on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Que Vuelvas” featuring Texan band Grupo Frontera.

For the first time, León is singing in English with his cover of Cash’s “Man In Black.” He was tapped to cover the song by Apple Music for the Nashville SC official playlist. The playlist includes music by Nashville’s most iconic artists, including Cash.

“Johnny Cash is an icon within country and American folk music, although his music continues to have a strong influence within music across all genres today,” León said in a statement. “It’s very important for me to be a part of this very meaningful project and we’re doing things with all of the respect that a figure as important as Mr. Johnny Cash deserves.”

Regional Mexican music can be seen as a Spanish extension of country music, so León sounds at home singing “Man in Black.” Though he is singing his heart out in English, there are elements of banda music blended into the track. León proves that the undeniable soul in his voice sounds great in any language.

León’s star is continuing to rise. Last month, he sold out his solo concert at The Forum in Inglewood, CA. Moreover, Mexican pop star Carlos Rivera enlisted León to feature on his song “Alguien Me Espera En Madrid” from his Sincerándome album, which came out today.
