There are many sides to Mexican producer Alec Sander. He explores bright house, funk, and pop using the nicknames Yesco and La Royale. He’s one half of Moon Runner, alongside Juan Soto. And then, there’s his dark, aggressive side: Mijo. Under this new moniker, Sander just released his first EP, Tecmex Uno, on Never Stop Music. Through this fantastic pun, the album title prepares us for the music on the EP, which is pure Mexican techno.
On the two original tracks, Mijo—who’s also the co-founder of Electrique Music—delivers dance floor-ready bangers with the repetitive, hypnotic elements that characterize techno. Steady beats are the backbones of the songs, with frantic synths and washes of white noise giving them movement and dynamism. Then, we have two remixes of the song “Está en inglés“: the first one is an acid take by Silver Light, a.k.a. the head of Never Stop Music, Moisés Ramírez; and the second one is by Sonido Fantasma, a duo formed by Bufi and Iñigo Vontier.
