The biggest Latine producer in the world has become an artist. Puerto Rican hit-maker Tainy released his debut Data last night (June 29) with stellar features, including Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, Arca, The Marías, Daddy Yankee, Skrillex, Feid, and more.
When reggaeton first broke through in the 2000s, Tainy was a protégé of Luny Tunes, who were responsible for classic hits like Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina.” Throughout the years, he helped usher in the genre’s second wind in the last decade. Tainy has since produced countless hits for artists like Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Kali Uchis, Selena Gomez, Jhayco, and others. Many of them return the favor by appearing on his debut album Data.
“There’s no standard on how Latin music is supposed to sound,” Tainy said in a statement. “Music is art, so we should create anything that feels amazing to us and connects with the listener. I had fun. It was a learning experience that I fully enjoyed because I could express myself in different aspects, not just music.”
The biggest surprise on the album is Bad Bunny’s secret feature on “Pasiempre.” His name is not listed on the Latine trap banger, which features Arcángel, Myke Towers, Jhayco, Omar Courtz, and Arca. After all the fire verses, Bad Bunny drops in at the end with an explosive verse of his own. “I’m Bad Bunny / I’m bigger than trap / My music sells like crack,” he sings in Spanish. Bad Bunny also features on the songs “Mojabi Desert” and “Lo Siento BB :/” with Julieta Venegas.
Tainy comes through with alternative perreo with the song “Mañana” featuring The Marías and Young Miko. EDM acts Skrillex and Four Tet join Tainy and Rauw Alejandro in the hypnotic “Volver.” Tainy’s album also includes the reggaeton romp “La Baby” featuring Daddy Yankee, Feid, and Sech. After helping reggaeton evolve, Tainy pushes the genre into the future with Data.
