It’s been a genre-bending year so far. The latest unexpected genre crossover involves bachata superstar Prince Royce’s latest single, “Si Te Preguntan…,” alongside Nicky Jam and Jay Wheeler. Although Nicky and Jay are usually on the reggaeton spectrum, the two show a new side of their artistry on their first bachata song, released on June 23.
“This song is about what many people go through after a breakup, and I love that Nicky and Jay are singing a bachata for the first time, which makes ‘Si Te Preguntan…’ even more special,” Prince Royce shared in a written press statement. “I hope everyone loves it.”
In the opening of the Mike Ho-directed music video, the three decide to sing a song they wrote to their ex-partners, who they know will make an appearance during their set. The trio emotionally serenades the audience as the public dances to the bachata track’s signature sounds. As expected, the trio then locks eyes with the three women as they walk in, sharing intense glances throughout the song’s performance. Towards mid-video, the artists appear to rekindle each of their romances. By the video’s end, the contact they share with their exes is warmer as the crowd cheers them on.
Positive reception flooded the comments of the video upon release. One Youtube user commented: “It will be a total success. It reminded me a lot of his beginnings. It made me see a better version of that talented man, proud of you and all that you have achieved.”
Another Youtube user commented: “Jay Wheeler proving that he is one of the most versatile artists in the world.”
While it’s new turf for Nicky and Jay, the two delivered their first bachata seamlessly, under the wing of one of the genre’s most emblematic artists. On the other hand, Prince Royce continues to deliver hit after hit, all while being on his European tour.
