After announcing his upcoming U.S. tour, Kevin Kaarl released a special cover of Mexican icon José José’s classic “El Triste.” The result? A nostalgic and modern tribute reimagined from an indie folk point of view. The cover also aligns with the song’s 55th anniversary of its epic performance at the Festival de la Canción Latina.
“El Triste NOW AVAILABLE worldwide. ❤️ A tribute made with outpouring respect and love for José José,” Kaarl wrote in Spanish. “Thanks to all the people who were part of this. I love you and keep listening to Ultra Sodade. SEE YOU LIVE VERY SOON.”
Kaarl completely reimagines the original classic by simplifying the song’s epic introduction and carrying an enthralling yet minimalized and modern version of what José José’s fans are used to. Instead, he makes it his own by giving it his melancholic touch, as opposed to José José’s dramatic and signature vocal flair. Known for his indie folk music, Kaarl’s version is spearheaded by the vocalist’s guitar, his brother’s melodic trumpet, and gentle percussion. It’s also powered by his distinctive deep octaves that give the classic a second wind.
Directed by Mónica G. Carter, the music video captures the original song’s era by taking us back to the past with sepia hues and grainy video clips. The cinematic video seemingly echoes José José’s epic performance at the Festival de la Canción Latina by following Kaarl and his band as they perform the beloved tune in what appears to be a television show with a live audience.

Fans are praising the new cover. A YouTube user, maxjaime6234, wrote in Spanish: “Sincerely I think it is a wonderful interpretation and even more so because it is in his style and that makes it unique for his audience, congratulations and as always you captivate us with that voice that you have!” Another YouTube user, OvejitaNegra, echoed the same sentiment: “Thank you for keeping your essence in thet cover, a tribute to el príncipe de la canción José José.”
Up next, Kaarl is set to embark on his ULTRA SODADE TOUR that will reach the U.S., Latin America, and Europe. His U.S. trek will take him to perform in cities like Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles.
