Los Tigres Del Norte is back with its newest corrido, “La Lotería.” The iconic norteño band dropped the first taste of their upcoming album today (Feb. 7). The result? A new track charged with lyrics about social issues, immigration, and politics, penned by songwriter Luciano Luna.
The new song and Sergio Arau-directed music video use the popular game of lotería’s cards as wordplay to discuss certain issues plaguing Latin America and the U.S. For example, they sing, “El Catrín convence con un buen discurso / Prometiendo bajarle La Estrella al pueblo / Pero llena El Contarito de monedas / Y El Perico viaja por los aeropuertos,” to seemingly bring up politics, drug trafficking, and how they work together.
To tackle police and cartels, they sing: “La Sirena suena por las cuatro esquinas / Cuando al Alacrán no pueden controlaro.” In relation to social issues like violence against women, protesting, and even the U.S. president: “El Pescado no está mordiendo el anzuelo / Ya La Dama alza la voz por tanto golpe / Nuestra gente se rebela en estos tiempos / Y hasta El Diablo ya lo mandan a la corte.” The music video shows the game’s card El Diablito as President Donald Trump, noting his mug shot with the number 08242023 — the date he was criminally charged.
Moreover, Los Tigres Del Norte bring up an immigrant’s sentiments with lyrics like: “Siempre parta El Corazón dejar tu tierra / Porque El Árbol ya no da muy buena sombra / Aunque El Gallo de otro rancho los despierta / Por volver siempre andan contando las horas / No es que quieran ya cambiarse de Bandera / Aunque lejos sus raíces siempre añoran.”

The emblematic band is known for being vocal about their political views. In the past, they have also released songs like “Somos Mas Americanos,” “De Paisano a Paisano,” and “Mis Dos Patrias” about immigration and dealing with two identities.
