Omar Apollo is putting a Mexican spin on a Sabrina Carpenter hit. A video was released last night (Aug. 1) of the Mexican-American superstar singing “Please Please Please” in the style of a corrido.

Carpenter has had a breakthrough year with her global smash “Espresso.” In June, she followed that song up with “Please Please Please,” which became her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With his appearance on Triple J’s “Like a Version” series, Omar revealed he decided to cover “Please Please Please” because he “couldn’t stop listening to it.” During his performance of the song, he switched it up with a corrido arrangement. In addition to singing, he also played the 12-string guitar with a bassist and another person on the six-string guitar. His Spanglish version of the song is innovative and gorgeous.

“I grew up on corridos,” Omar told Triple J. “That was the main music I was listening to, like old rancheros classics. Things like that from Mexico. One thing I’ve always noticed in songs that are amazing is that you can put them in any genre, so I wanted to make it more Mexican and traditional.”

For “Like a Version,” Omar also performed the song “Done With You” from his latest album God Said No. The LP came out in June and also includes his singles “Spite” and “Less of You.” The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal also appears on the album in a surprise voice note. Omar recently wrapped the international leg of his God Said No World Tour. The first concert in the U.S. kicks off on Aug. 20 in Indianapolis, IN.

Last week, Omar revealed that he will make his acting debut in the Luca Guadagnino movie Queer. Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey will also star in the film that will premiere later this month at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.
