For the first time in 17 years, Shakira will be performing at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. As part of her Video Vanguard Award celebrations, fans hope Beyoncé and Karol G will join her to sing their hit songs together.
Shakira will be honored as this year’s Video Vanguard Award recipient. She will be the second Latina to receive the award, following Jennifer Lopez in 2018. Shakira will be making history at the event for Latine music as the first artist from Latin America with a largely Spanish-language catalog to be honored by the VMAs.
“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire & influence the masses with her unique musical prowess,” Bruce Gillmer, executive producer of the VMAs, said in a statement. “She’s a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music.”
Not only will Shakira receive the top award, but she will also be performing at the VMAs as well. Previous Video Vanguard Award nominees have performed a medley of their greatest hits, so Shakira will probably do the same. Beyoncé has a day off from her Renaissance Tour that day, so some fans are hoping she performs “Beautiful Liar” with Shakira for the first time. “Shakira let bey surprise join you on stage to perform beautiful liar. Thank you!” one person wrote on Twitter. “streets saying beyoncé is joining shakira for a beautiful liar performance,” another person wrote.
Both Shakira and Beyoncé are nominated for Artist of the Year at this year’s VMAs, so the long-awaited performance is possible. Shakira also showed her support for Beyoncé by watching her concert in Miami, FL, earlier this month.
Moreover, with Karol G as a confirmed performer, it’s much more plausible for her to finally sing “TQG” live with Shakira.
The 2023 MTV VMAs will air live on the network on Sep. 12.
