Clubz have been taking their sweet time to finally drop their debut album. They shared its first single, the deliciously smooth, sax-driven “El Rollo” about six months ago. But afterwards, the Monterrey duo went silent – a sure sign they were cooking up something good. That turned out to be the second single off their upcoming album, slated for a 2017 release through Canada Editorial.
“Popscuro” isn’t dark in any sense of the word; instead, it bubbles with bouncy synths. It’s impossible not to link Clubz to turn-of-the-80s synth pop, and this song finds them knee-deep in it: dashes of AM funk and glimpses of disco embellish their glossy pop, with a bass line that steals your attention from the octave-up layered vocals.
Directed by Laura Martinova in Barcelona, the video tells the story of a young love triangle torn apart on the dance floor. After a boy and a girl hit it off in a convenience store, he tries to win her heart at the club – but not only does she have a boyfriend, he’s got moves too. Who gets to keep the girl in the end? Press play to find out.
Clubz plays Festival Nrmal on March 11 and Primavera Sound on June 3.
