After a year of collabs with some of Atlanta hip-hop’s biggest stars (and studio sessions with reggaeton’s man of the moment), Kap G is descending on 2017 in full force. This morning he dropped “Freakin N Geekin,” a wild blast of party hip-hop guaranteed to draw repeated listens on this, the first weekend of the year.
The Chicano MC rips into the track with the kind of quotables Dominican dembowseros would be proud of: “Hola nice to meet you/yeah you know they call me Take Your Bitch,” he spits. Kap delivers brisk bars with the vocal acrobatics and operatic experimentation we’ve come to love from Atlanta stars like Young Thug or Migos, all over a shapeshifting, two-minute trap beat. It’s boisterous, triumphant, and potent – the kind of supersized track you’ll find me cranking up every time that first downbeat hits.
As our own John Calderon put it, Kap’s rise in Southern hip-hop is carving a new space for Latinos in the genre, one that isn’t “New York-centered, steeped in kitsch, or driven by pop/EDM.” Though “Freakin N Geekin” may be a one-off release, we’ll just have to wait and see where Kap takes us in 2017.
