Leonardo Ponce, the young Mexican producer known for his work with Timmy & The Monsters, as well as his own solo efforts as Ghostcatcher and Pønce, has cornered the piano-driven pop melody in Mexico’s wonderfully prolific electronic scene. Renowned for his dark and gloomy pop sensibilities, Pønce dropped an unexpectedly sunny track on Ebro’s Beats 1 show yesterday, and it’s exactly the pick-me-up you need for your winter blues.
“Animal” feels like a breezy day at the beach with bae and a cooler full of ice-cold Coronas. Whimsical bells and an up-tempo piano arrangement keep the track a lighthearted yet high-energy effort, but don’t be fooled: Pønce’s grittier dark side still manages to show up during the song’s break. The song points at an evolving musical identity and sound, which only serves to fuel excitement for the album Pønce plans to lay on us in 2016. Watch the high-energy video here:
