N.A.S.A. is an L.A.-based collaborative production unit. Their new single “Iko” – a rap-friendly take on the Dixie Cups’ 1965 single “Iko Iko” – has been remixed by sometime N.A.S.A. partners Tropkillaz into a hyphy trap jam. Whereas the original N.A.S.A. track creates wild and massive breaks out of timpani drum percussion and weaves Lizzo’s rap vocals into the mix, the Tropkillaz rework is a more relaxed take on the production. The swing of DJ Mustard-style basslines feels akin to moombahton; it allows the song’s 60s era Louisiana roots (borne of West Indian-meets-Native American culture) to breathe on the surface yet again.
