Navigating a skincare routine can feel like a daunting task, especially with the myriad of products available. From hydrating creams to face scrubs and serums, the world of skincare is also filled with a complex array of ingredients. So, it’s not just about finding the right products for you but also selecting the best ingredients for your skin type and concerns. Tackling this reality can be challenge, but fortunately, dermatologists at Neutrogena have collaborated to introduce the ‘Great Face Race,’ an initiative aimed at simplifying skin-care science.

This unique content series takes a social-first approach, featuring dermatologists and Latina influencers who join forces to showcase four of the brand’s Vital Duo products. Drawing inspiration from challenge shows, the series divides participants into teams such as Team Hydrate, Team Balance, Team Regenerate, and Team Clear Skin. Each team corresponds to a distinct Neutrogena skincare bundle tailored to address specific skincare concerns, now available for purchase.

A recent consumer survey by Neutrogena revealed that 53% of Latinas aged 18-35 rely on social media for skincare information. That’s why it made sense for Latine content creators Vale Genta and Giannina Gibelli to play a key role in this social series, contributing to the simplification of skincare science. The ‘Great Face Race’ serves as a social-first educational and entertaining series accessible on Neutrogena’s Instagram and TikTok pages.

Remezcla had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Bertha Braum, one of Neutrogena’s board-certified dermatologists, on how the ‘Great Face Race’ is keeping the Latine community informed on skincare. And while we were at it, we also sneaked in some skin-care questions. Read the interview, below.

Tell us more about the series?

The ‘Great Face Race’ is an innovative and engaging way to address skin concerns for different skin types. This series offers a platform for learning about skincare through real-life experiences and practical insights. It focuses on ingredients and combinations that work for various concerns, making skincare education more relatable and accessible.

There are so many “skincare specialists” and misinformation on social media, how does the series ensure they’re giving accurate information?

It maintains accuracy by collaborating with trusted board-certified dermatologists and skincare experts who provide evidence-based information. The brand places a strong emphasis on scientific research and transparency, ensuring that the recommendations shared in the series align with the latest dermatological knowledge.

In the age of endless social media videos, what is the overall goal for this social-first series?

The Great Face Race objective is to cut through the noise of social media and provide reliable, science-backed information. It aims to educate and empower viewers with accurate skincare knowledge and best practices. By sharing authentic stories and practical tips, the series helps viewers make informed decisions about their skincare routines.

A recent survey says Latinas ages 18-35 learn about skincare through social media, why do you think that is?

Social media provides an accessible platform for sharing information and experiences, it’s actually the reason I started sharing information. It’s a space where individuals can learn from a wide range of sources, including trusted experts and peer recommendations. The visual and interactive nature of social media also makes it engaging and relatable, making it an ideal medium to learn about skincare.

If you are new to skincare, what are the top products to start with?

I recommend beginning with a cleanser (like Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hydrating Gel Cleanser) followed [a moisturizer] for hydration. From there, you can incorporate a niacinamide product to even out skin tone, sunscreen for daytime protection, and a gentle retinol for nighttime use. These products offer a solid foundation for a basic skincare regimen.

Scarring and skin marks are something that we all deal with, especially those with medium to dark skin tones, what product would you recommend if someone wanted to tackle this?

Neutrogena’s Stubborn Marks PM Treatment is a valuable nighttime product for addressing post-acne scars. This product is now sold in a duo pack and is referenced in the Great Face Race as Team Clear Skin. This duo includes the Stubborn Texture Daily Cleanser and Stubborn Marks PM Treatment.

Let’s talk about sunscreen. There are many misconceptions of SPF within Latine communities —Why is sunscreen important to wear?

Sunscreen is essential because it protects your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. This can lead to premature aging, sunburns, and, most importantly, an increased risk of skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen daily helps prevent these issues, maintains the skin’s health and appearance, and is a crucial step in any skincare routine.
