Bayron Matos: Orgullo de Los Mina, the Jessy Terrero directed documentary about Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Bayron Matos, has just been nominated for a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Feature Story in Spanish. The film is produced by Cinema Giants in partnership with Mundo NFL and Remezcla.

The documentary follows Matos’s path to the NFL through the league’s International Player Pathway Program, a program that many people still don’t know about and that counts Matos as one of its biggest names. Matos is only the second Dominican player in NFL history.

“This kid who came from humble beginnings and a neighborhood in the Dominican Republic that is sometimes riddled with violence, and see how he kind of overcame it, and sports was what saved his life,” Terrero shared.”

What we see in the documentary is only the beginning of Matos’s story in the NFL as well. Terrero added in a recent Remezcla interview, “We’ll come back later and maybe show how his career progressed, but the story is making it. Just being a young Dominican kid from this kind of area and being able to walk on the field with a Dolphins jersey, it’s a success that’s worth a story.” And maybe, one that’s now worth an award.

Other films nominated for Outstanding Feature Story in Spanish include Greenland and SC Reportajes: MI NOMBRE ES DANY GARCIA from ESPN Deportes | ESPN+. Also Telemundo | Universo | Peacock recieved three nominations for Greenland: San Francisco, Hermanos Limardo: Lazos de Acero, Momentos Que Marcan, and “El Niño.”

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will hand out the awards, which will recognize excellence in sports television coverage, on May 20 at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in Manhattan, NY.
