On Friday (December 9), Brazil lost a heartbreaking match to Croatia, on penalty kicks. Brazil was one of the last two South American countries competing in the 2022 World Cup along with Argentina.
The Brazil-Croatia quarterfinals match ended in a 1-1 tie. Neymar scored a goal in extra time to take the 1-0 lead, but Croatia’s Bruno Petkovic knotted the score at 1-1 before the match went to penalty kicks.
During the shootout, Brazilian forward Rodrygo missed his first shot and Croatia took advantage by hitting its first three in a row. Brazil still had a chance to send the match to sudden death if it hit their last two goals and Croatia missed its last, but the team’s fourth kick, this one by Marquinhos – pinged off the goal post and the match was over.
Brazil’s fans were shocked by the loss. They were the favorites to win and move on to the semifinals to take on the winner of the Argentina-Netherlands match.
Of course, the memes immediately started rolling out. Some were about Neymar and his chances at another World Cup.
While others were quick to make edits to never write off Croatia.
Some had theories about why Brazil lost its match. Too much dancing?

The loss probably stung more since Argentina beat the Netherlands on penalty kicks later that night.
