Sunday’s El Clasico matchup between Barcelona and Real Madrid was an unforgettable spectacle, a back-and-forth game that culminated with Lionel Messi’s last-gasp winner for the blaugrana. It’s not surprising, then, that social media was ablaze all over the world, as commentary, analysis, and some great memes flew fast and heavy throughout the 90 minutes.

What might be surprising, however, was that the country most active on social media during the game wasn’t Spain; in fact, the home country for both clubs was only fifth. No, the top spot was held down by none other than Mexico, who topped Indonesia and Brazil in traffic, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.

Messi took the top spot as the most-mentioned player, following his stunning brace and especially following his stoic celebration of the game-winner, in which he took off his jersey and held it in front of the Madridista crowd. Coming closely behind him was Cristiano Ronaldo, who had a poor game by his meteoric standards, and Neymar, who ranked third despite being suspended for the match.

While most tweets focused on those three, the memes and jokes came flooding in about every aspect of the game, from Sergio Ramos’s red card to Casemiro’s escape from the same fate. Here are some of the best reactions from around the world to one of the best Clasico matches in recent memory.

The suspended Neymar chimed in via his Instagram story:

As always, Barcelona defender and certified Twitter troll Gerard Pique had the last laugh, going for the crowd-pleasing Daft Punk reference in his much-anticipated post-match post.
