Thousands of fútbol fans flooded the streets in cities and small towns in Argentina and around the world Tuesday (December 13) after their team won its semifinal match over Croatia 3-0 and advanced to the 2022 World Cup Finals on Sunday (December 18). Argentina will play against the winner of France vs. Morocco, who take the field on Wednesday (December 14).

In Argentina’s capital city of Buenos Aires, fans filled the Plaza de la República, where the historic monument The Obelisk is located, to celebrate the victory. As soon as the match was over, it took about 90 minutes for the plaza to get jam-packed.

The sea of people cheering and waving banners and flags was an incredible sight to behold.

Not everyone went out into the streets to celebrate right away. Many of the Argentina fans in Qatar stayed inside Lusail Stadium for at least 45 minutes after the match to chant and celebrate their country’s win.

Countries whose teams were knocked out of the tournament were cheering on the team from Argentina. Many of them want to see Lionel Messi win his first World Cup. This will be Messi’s last chance at the title.

Even countries that didn’t have a team in the World Cup tournament were celebrating, too. Bangladesh, who is known for having passionate fans for the Argentina fútbol team, celebrated enthusiastically in the streets of their country.

The celebration will continue for at least the next five days when Argentina and either France or Morocco etch themselves into the history books.
