As attacks on the immigrant community persist, a Republican candidate in Georgia’s gubernatorial race is the latest to use his platform to spread hate and misinformation about a vulnerable group. State Senator Michael Williams is taking a “Deportation Bus Tour” to the state’s sanctuary cities – that is, places where the police won’t cooperate with immigration officials – to “expose how dangerous illegal aliens ruin local economies, cost American jobs, increase healthcare costs and lower education standards.”

In a commercial for the tour, he says he hopes to fill the bus with undocumented immigrants. “We’re not just going to track them and watch them roam around our state,” Williams said, according to The Hill. “We’re going to put them on this bus and send ’em home.”

Though this country has long been unwelcoming to undocumented immigrants, the election of President Donald Trump has made it more difficult for this community. As anti-immigrant sentiments run high, Williams’ deportation bus seems like a ploy to bolster his chances. Currently, he’s facing off against six other candidates and a recent poll found that only 3 percent of voters back him.
