Colombia’s beserk global bass crew touched down in Austin yesterday for their first SXSW ever. Here’s a refresher on all things El Freaky before you hit up their showcases this week.

ESSENTIAL FACTS

Known as: Colombia’s global bass innovation crew, consisting of DJs Mike Styles and Camilo Corredor, emcee and VJ Andrés Shaq, and visual artist and brandmaestro Fat Sugar.

Background: Bogotá pa’l mundo.

Sounds like: If you want a taste of a true cross-section of Colombia’s here and now musical traditions, listen to this motley DJ crew. The foursome have managed to chop up and remix musical traditions from throughout all of the regions of the country–porro, gaita, chirimia, cumbia, marimba, and more–to create something 100% urban Bogotá.

The sound is purely party: through their Freaky Friday parties, they’ve created a home to debut international touring acts, just last year having brought Mr. Pauer, DJ Panamami, Oro11, Uproot Andy, and Geko Jones for their Pura Crema festival at the city’s massive Teatrón venue. Their Sabroso EP last year flaunted their production chops and ferocious work ethic, with champeta urbana tracks like “La Barracuda” featuring Charles King ending up blasting from Barranquilla comparsa floats to the capital’s underground parties.

Why you should see their showcase: Los Freaky are constantly reinventing their live set with new track refixes and live visuals custom-made and mapped for the occasion. We’re willing to bet they’ll have some Tejano-specific treats up their sleeves, and maybe even a preview of their upcoming releases with some of the Caribbean’s finest singjays.
