Thanks to his hit Netflix series, Luis Miguel has broken a record on Spotify. With his music catalog, he’s the first Mexican artist to hit five billion downloads on the streaming platform.

Luis Miguel: The Series returned to Netflix for a second season on April 18. Mexican actor and singer Diego Boneta resumed playing the lead role of Miguel. In this latest season, the series explores Miguel’s later life in the 1990s and 2000s, when he damaged his hearing from an audio equipment accident. His romance with Mariah Carey will also be revisited.

Since the show’s return, there’s been a reinvigorated interest in Miguel’s music. He celebrated his record-breaking five billion streams in an Instagram post. Spotify recognized LuisMi as the first Mexican artist on the platform to reach that feat. His most streamed song on Spotify is “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar” from 1987’s Soy Como Quiero Ser. His Spanish version of Dusty Springfield’s “I Only Want to Be With You” has over 300 million streams.

Other top-streamed songs by Miguel include 1989’s “La Incondicional” from his Busca Una Mujer album. The ballad has over 254 million streams on Spotify. “Culpable o No (Miénteme Como Siempre),” from the same album, follows with 176 million streams. Surprisingly, “La Chica Del Bikini Azúl” or “Cuando Calienta El Sol” are not in Miguel’s top 10 most-streamed songs on Spotify. Those classics should be streamed nonetheless.

El Sol de México is also nominated for Latin Touring Artist of the Decade at the Pollstar Awards. Usually the award show celebrates the top-selling tours of the past year, but that changed when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most live entertainment in 2020. In support of his México Por Siempre album, Miguel’s had one of the top-selling Latin tours in the U.S. He later won Album of the Year at the 2018 Latin Grammy Awards.
