Karol G’s name is known worldwide now. In an interview published yesterday (Feb. 22), the Colombian superstar revealed how she created her stage name.

Karol G was born Carolina Giraldo Navarro in Medellín, Colombia. In an interview with Wired, she was answering the most-searched questions about her on the Internet. One of the questions was: “What’s Karol G’s real name?” While talking about the origins of her name, she revealed that she was a fan of 50 Cent’s hip-hop G-Unit growing up.

“When I was in school, I used to really love G-Unit,” Karol G said. “I don’t know if everybody here remembers them and I was like super obsessed with all of them, so my friends used to call me Carolina G.” Karol G added that when she started out in music, she was going by Carol G at first. “But then I just changed it with a K, so that’s why I’m Karol G,” she said. Interestingly, the G could also stand for her last name Giraldo as well.

Karol G is currently gearing up to release her next album Mañana Será Bonito. With the release of the album tomorrow, she will also drop her highly-anticipated collaboration “TQG” with Colombian icon Shakira. The title reportedly stands for “Te Quedó Grande.”

Earlier this week, Karol G and Shakira teased the music video in Times Square in New York City. In one scene, Karol G can be seen jumping off of a building. She later whips her red hair while Shakira dances in a blue bodysuit.

Shakira isn’t the only collaboration on Mañana Será Bonito. Shakira will also team up with Mexican singer Carla Morrison on the title track. Spanish rapper Bad Gyal will feature on “Kármika” with Karol G and Sean Paul. Dominican rapper Ángel Dior will most likely bring dembow to the album with “Ojos Ferrari” featuring Justin Quiles.
