With each passing day of the Trump administration’s reign of incompetence and bigotry, every new headline seems to deliver another devastating blow to our collective psyche. Stories on ICE raids, the threats to programs such as DACA and TPS, and shameful comments on so-called “shithole countries” add constant insult to injury, both on a domestic level and on the world stage.

Thankfully, in the face of this pointed antagonism towards immigrant communities, grassroots organizing is thriving. One of the most poignant and nuanced fundraising initiatives to emerge over the last year is Los Angeles’ Solidarity for Sanctuary, a benefit concert series started by Mija Management’s Doris Muñoz to aid immigrant families with the exorbitant legal fees related to their visa processing. The events celebrate distinctly Latinx cultural touchstones, like quinceañeras and Selena, and partner with local musicians and vendors to foster a “by nosotrxs, for nosotrxs” environment.

In the spirit of Women’s History Month, Solidarity for Sanctuary’s next show will be completely led by black and Latina women with an event benefiting CARECEN LA, a Central American resource center and non-profit organization providing legal assistance for undocumented youth in Los Angeles.

The all-ages show will take place at Highland Park haunt The Hi Hat on March 31 and will feature the musical stylings of soulful newcomer Hunnah, emerging Jamaican queen Amindi K. Fro$t and Dominican-Brazilian vedette Jarina de Marco. A magical DJ set by Honduran synth pop goddess Empress Of will keep you twirling late into the night. To top it all off, CARECEN will be hosting a free legal clinic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the same day of the event.

The Solidarity for Sanctuary show takes place at 8 p.m. on March 31 at Los Angeles’ The Hi Hat. To purchase tickets, click here. Check out the flyers below for more info.
