Season 51 of Saturday Night Live kicked off on Oct. 4 with Bad Bunny pulling hosting duties. During the opening monologue, the Puerto Rican superstar opened up about his headlining the Super Bowl halftime show and the backlash he’s gotten.
Bad Bunny hosted SNL for the second time in his career. The hosting gig comes on his recent announcement of headlining next year’s Superbowl halftime show. He will make history as the first solo male Latin artist to the global stage at the football game. He’s also received backlash from many conservatives because he will perform hits from his Spanish-only catalog.
He took advantage of the moment on SNL to address the backlash. While Bad Bunny was talking, a spliced together clip of Fox News personalities played that said: “Bad Bunny is my favorite musician and he should be the next president.”
“You might not know this, but I’m doing the Superbowl halftime show, and I’m very happy,” he said. “I think everybody’s happy about it, even Fox News. But really, I’m very excited to be doing the Superbowl and I know that people all around the world who love my music are also happy.”

In the middle of his monologue, Bad Bunny switched into speaking in Spanish when talking about representing Latinos at the Superbowl. In his native tongue, he added, “All the Latinos and Latinas in the world, and here in the United States, all those people who have worked to open doors. More than an achievement for me, it’s an achievement for all of us, showing that footprint in this country, no one can take that away or erase it. And if you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn.”
