A second Frida Kahlo museum is coming to Mexico City this fall. The legendary Mexican artist’s family will soon open the new Casa Roja with items and works of hers that have never been on exhibit before.
Kahlo is one of Mexico’s most influential and emblematic artists of the 20th century. After she passed, the home that she shared with her partner Diego Rivera became the Museo Frida Kahlo in 1958. It’s become known as the Casa Azúl in the Coyoacán burrough of Mexico City.
In an interview with Vogue, Kahlo’s descendents revealed that they will open a second museum for her in the same vicinity of the Casa Azúl. The Casa Roja was originally owned by her parents and later her sister Cristina Kahlo.
“For the first time, the voice of the family will be at the heart of how Frida’s story is told,” Kahlo’s great-grandniece Hentschel Romeo said. “This museum isn’t just about her work—it’s about her world. It’s about how the people closest to her shaped who she became. And it’s also about the living family—those of us who carry her legacy forward.”

The Casa Roja, which will also be known as the Museo Casa Kahlo, will open to the public on September 27. According to her descendants, the new museum will include items of Kahlo’s that have never been put on display before, including a piece of embroidery she made at the age of five and the very first oil painting that she created. A recently discovered mural of hers will also be part of the exhibition.
