Don Omar is opening up about his cancer diagnosis. The Puerto Rican icon shared his personal story with cancer and he is receiving support from many of his colleagues in the music industry.

Omar is one of the pioneers of the reggaeton music scene in Puerto Rico. Along with artists like Daddy Yankee, Tego Calderón, and Ivy Queen, he helped push the genre into the mainstream with his hits like “Salió El Sol” and “Dale Don.” After a decade away from the industry, Omar returned to music in 2023 on the Back to Reggaeton EP. This year, Omar celebrated his comeback with the Back to Reggaeton Tour, which was sold-out in arenas across the U.S.

In April, Omar announced a second leg of Back to the Reggaeton Tour that will kick off in August. While taking a break from tour preparations, he shared that he was diagnosed with cancer. In the Instagram post with a photo of his hospital bracelet, Omar added that he would fight the disease until he was clear of it.

“Yes today [I have cancer], but tomorrow I will be cancer free,” he wrote in the caption of a photo of his arm with a band from Orlando Health. “Good intentions are well received. See you all soon. #fuckcancer”

Since opening up about his cancer diagnosis, Omar has received support from many artists in the music industry. Singers like Franco “El Gorila,” Olga Tañón, and Sharlene Taulé have commented with well wishes on his post as he prepares to undergo treatment for the disease.

“God is with you as always and I’m sending my prayers of good wishes and faith that you will heal,” Franco “El Gorila” wrote. “You are a warrior.” Tañón added, “My beautiful boy, you are a warrior of a thousand battles and you win against this as well.”

Other artists like DJ Nelson, Alcover, and Willy William have added to the outpouring of love for Omar. He hasn’t yet announced if his cancer treatment will affect the next leg of his tour, which will resume on Aug. 7 in Oakland, CA.
