A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit southern Peru Thursday morning (May 26). According to Weather.com, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that the quake started around 8:02 a.m. EDT.

Reports indicate that the earthquake “struck at a depth of 135 miles” and that “the epicenter was located… about eight miles west-northwest of the town of Azangaro.”

When the quake began, radio reports said that shaking was felt as far away as far as La Paz, Bolivia, located about 200 miles southeast of the epicenter, but that the city experienced no structural damage or deaths.

The Associated Press also reports that the quake could be felt in other cities in Peru, including Arequipa, Tacna, Cusco, and northern Chile. There are allegedly no reports of victims at the time of press. No additional information has been released about any further damage or injuries in the vicinity.

This past November, Peru was rocked by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake’s epicenter was reported to be in the Amazonas region in northern Peru. There was extensive structural damage to roads, bridges, and buildings in the area. The earthquake was strong enough to be felt in neighboring Ecuador and Colombia.
