After making her mark in music and TV, Gaby Moreno is heading to Broadway next. The Guatemalan star is set to join the cast of the hit musical Hadestown.
Moreno, who hails from Guatemala City, is known for masterfully blending the sound of Americana and Latine music. Throughout her career as a singer-songwriter, she has won a Grammy Award and two Latin Grammys.
In 2023, Moreno teamed up with longtime friend and fellow Guatemalan star Oscar Isaac for a duet of “Luna de Xelajú.” She has also made her mark in Hollywood as a co-writer of the theme song for Parks and Recreation. Her music has been featured in Orange Is The New Black and Guillermo Del Toro’s Netflix show Cabinet of Curiosities as well. Now Moreno is getting ready to add Broadway actress to her resume.
Hadestown is a Tony Award-winning musical by Anaïs Mitchell that’s based on the Greek mythology of Orpheus and Eurydice. Mitchell translated that ancient subject matter to present day by grounding the music in elements of blues and folk music, which is very much in Moreno’s wheelhouse. Moreno will play the role of Persphone, who is a wine-drinking goddess and the wife of Hades. Gary Dourdan is also joining the new cast as Hades. They’ll be joined by Joshua Colley as Orpheus, J. Harrison Ghee as Hermes, and Jordan Tyson as Eurydice.
Moreno will step into the role of Persphone starting on Tuesday, March 3. The current cast of Hadestown will take their final bow on Sunday, March 1. The musical is in its seventh year on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre. For more information on where to get tickets for Hadestown, click here.
