For the first time ever, the San Francisco Lowrider Parade, also known as the Cruise with a Purpose parade, will be televised.
Lowrider cars have been a hallmark of Chicano culture in California. And the San Francisco Lowrider Council (SF LRC) has partnered with the City of San Francisco, the Mission Merchants Association, and Calle 24 Latino Cultural District to present the Lowrider Parade. The parade will also be led by grand marshal David Gonzales. The Mexican-American cartoonist and artist is also known for being the creator of the iconic Homies figurines.
“It’s an honor to be the Grand Marshal of the Lowrider Parade this year,” Gonzales shared in a statement. “My artwork has always reflected our cultura, and has served as a window for the broader community to see and understand the color and passion of who we are. Much of what I depict in my art draws upon my experience in the lowriding community. To be able to participate in this year’s parade is a full-circle moment for me. I’m a local homie, born and raised across the bridge in Richmond. I’m honored to be once again cruising ‘the city’ and proudly representing our beautiful Bay Area.”
The SF Lowrider Parade will take place on September 20 in the Mission District. The cars in the parade will also be joined by Fogo Na Roupa, Loco Bloco SF, Cuicacalli ballet folklorico, Asociacion Mayab, and Mixcoatl Aztec Danzantes.

That same day, Gonzales will also oversee the “King of the Streets” Hopping Competition, which will show off the cars’ hydraulics setups, at 3:00 p.m. PST. At the event, Gonzales’ new Homie Lotería game will also be available for purchase.
In addition, Frankie Navarro composed the official anthem for the parade.
The Cruise with a Purpose parade will be televised and streamed live on CBS here at 1:00 p.m. PST.
