Karol G had a big night Wednesday (March 2) when she accepted the Rule Breaker Award at the 2022 Billboard Women in Music Awards.
When she received the award, La Bichota said she was “super happy,” but based on her full ensemble that night, what she should’ve said was, “In case I forget to tell you later, I had a really good time tonight.”
It’s a line that Julia Roberts says in the 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman. At the awards show, Karol G channeled Robert’s movie character, Vivian Ward, by baring her shoulders in a flowing red gown and accessorizing with long white silk gloves and diamond jewelry.
The outfit was reminiscent of the one Vivian wears when her gentleman caller, Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), takes her to attend a performance of La traviata by the San Francisco Opera.
Twitter users were quick to point out the homage Karol G was paying to the classic movie and memorable character, which landed Roberts the second Academy Award nomination of her career. If anything, Karol G looked the part of a “mujer bonita” and turned plenty of heads at the awards show.
Others said they were glad Karol G was getting attention for her fashion statements and not being overshadowed by any male Latin artists on the red carpet.
Some fans even took the opportunity to live vicariously through Karol G and her tribute to Roberts and her rom-com.
At one point in Pretty Woman, Vivian tells Edward that she wants more out of life when their time together is over. “I want the fairytale,” she says. With a successful music career and a new venture into acting, there’s no doubt that Karol G is living out her own enchanting story.
