Kourtney Kardashian tied the knot with Travis Barker this past weekend, and the veil seems to be getting just as much attention as the ceremony. Fans were shocked, some good and some bad, when they saw Kardashian donning a long cathedral veil train with the depiction of La Virgen María.

The standout veil is a lacey nod to one of the most revered figures in Catholicism. La Virgen holds a special place in the hearts of Catholics throughout Latin America and Latine Catholics in the U.S, with there being a dedicated day to honor her in December. She also appears in several artistic renderings throughout Latin America and holds cultural significance within the Latine art scene.

Some fans of the POOSH mogul were swooning over the veil, while others were just stunned that the religious figure made an appearance at the wedding. Although the inspiration allegedly came from the tattoo on Barker’s head, people were just perplexed as to why the depiction was included in the first place, given its strong religious ties.

Perhaps the most stunning part for some people is that the Virgen’s image was wore with a mini, lacey dress. People questioned why such a large veil with an important religious figure would accompany a more-revealing dress, which could be deemed offensive within the religion.

And that wasn’t the only dress she wore throughout the wedding weekend in Italy that had a religious depiction. For one of the pre-wedding activities, she was photographed in a Dolce & Gabbana black mini dress adorned with a painted image of Madonna and baby Jesus in the center.
