Leexa Fox has officially won the title of “México’s Next Drag Superstar.” After flexing her musical theater chops with a spectacular talent show performance, she snatched the crown on the second season of Drag Race México. In an interview with Remezcla, Leexa Fox talked about her run on the show, the importance of representing the non-binary community, and drag from her region of Mexico.
“To win Drag Race México means that all the hard work I’ve done in my life was worth it,” she says. “I needed this in my life to feel very happy and fulfilled. I’m proud to represent my home state and all of Mexico with this crown.”
The bigger and more well-known drag scenes in Mexico are in Mexico City and Guadalajara, where season one winner Cristian Peralta is from. Leexa Fox hails from the northern part of the country in Mexicali. She and Elektra Vandergeld, who wrote #TeamLeexa on the Werk Room mirror after her elimination, were the two queens from Baja California on the cast.
“I want to elevate drag in my state because a queen has never won from Baja California,” she says. “I’m the first one. It would make me so proud to give visibility to my city and my state and show there’s more opportunities for the people from the north. With this crown, I represent that if you fight your dreams, you can make them come true.”
While competing on Drag Race México, Leexa Fox talked openly about being non-binary, with the audience getting to see an honest portrayal of the complexities of having this gender identity and a feminine drag persona. She also celebrated her identity through her drag like in the “Luchadoras Exóticas” episode with their sister. During her victory speech, Leexa Fox exclaimed in Spanish, “The future is non-binary!”
“To represent my non-binary community is important in México because they want to silence our voices,” Leexa Fox shares. “They want to make it appear like we don’t exist. It’s important for me to send that message to a country that’s very homophobic, machista, and misogynistic and to use my platform to normalize the existence of all types of people.”
Before appearing on Drag Race México, Leexa Fox played the drag character of Tray Sophisticay in a Mexican production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and occasionally took on the lead role. During the season finale, she showed off her vocal range and stole the talent show with a beautiful live performance of “La Llorona.” Leexa Fox adds that at her recent drag shows, her fans ask her to sing that song and “Lonely” from the girl groups episode.
“I wanted people to see that I sing with zero Auto-Tune,” she says with a laugh. “That was one of my most intense and vulnerable moments because I work in musical theater and I’ve sang since I was little. I felt like [my talent show performance] represented México perfectly with a very emblematic song. It was important for me that a drag queen do that on this franchise.”
Leexa Fox also reveals that she recorded three songs with plans to release music of her own soon. In the future, she hopes to collaborate with Queen of the Universe winner Taiga Brava and Mexican pop star Danna after seeing her on Global All Stars. As for musical theater, Leexa Fox has her eye on joining the MentiDrags cast.
“I’m going to keep working hard to elevate my drag, so people can see how much I love this artform,” she says. “I won’t get tired of serving looks. More than anything, I want to enjoy this moment.”
