INTERVIEW: Grupo Firme Teases Gloria Trevi Collab & Talks LGBTQ+ Representation in Música Mexicana

After taking a nine-month break from performing, Grupo Firme is feeling renewed and ready to party again with the 2024 La Última Peda Tour. These past few months, lead singer Eduin Caz worried his fans with his announcement that he would retire from the band. In a video teaser of the upcoming tour, he wakes up from a hangover and says, “How can this be la última peda if we’re just getting started?”

“When we wake up hungover, we always say, ‘We’re not going to drink anymore. This is la última peda,’” Caz tells Remezcla. “And that’s not true! You always go back to drinking. That’s why our tour is called ‘La Última Peda,’ because it’s never the last one.”

The party appeared to be over for Eduin while Grupo Firme was taking time off. Last year, he revealed that he would retire from performing with the band. The frontman cited wanting to find “emotional stability” and later health issues as his reasons for retirement. He calls the break a much-needed “emotional breather” for the band. During that time, he was able to spend more time with his kids and work through his health issues.

“I feel happy,” he shares. “I feel enthusiastic. I feel really good health-wise. My throat feels better than before. I’m back with my friends again, and we’re ready to get back to work.”

Grupo Firme has broken multiple records with their previous tours visiting stadiums in Mexico, the U.S., and other parts of Latin America. With La Última Peda Tour, the group will be performing in arenas across the U.S. starting in May. Eduin mentions that playing in venues different from what they’re accustomed to was a conscious decision.

“This tour is coming without the pressure or stress of breaking a record,” he says. “We’re coming off of one of the best-selling tours in the world, the Enfiestados y Amanecidos Tour. We didn’t feel completely fulfilled or connected with our audience. There were a lot of likes and tickets sold, but we weren’t enjoying it like we usually do. That’s why this time we decided to perform in arenas, which are smaller, so we can be closer to our fans.”

In addition to hard partying, Grupo Firme concerts are known for being inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community. Eduin’s brother and bandmate, Jhonny Caz, is openly gay. In the música mexicana genre that has historically excluded queer people, Jhonny has turned their shows into LGBTQ+ pride events. During one concert in 2021, Jhonny’s partner Jonathan Bencomo proposed to him onstage.

“It’s an honor and, at the same time, it’s a big responsibility because I want Grupo Firme to open more doors for LGBTQ+ people in música mexicana,” Jhonny says about queer representation. “I hope tomorrow there will be more artists coming who can represent this community filled with love. We’re not that different. We’re people, independently of who we love or how we live. We love music and we love to party, and that’s Grupo Firme’s message for everyone.”

Jhonny also reveals that Grupo Firme is working with artists beloved by the LGBTQ+ community. He mentions there are “several collaborations” coming, but he appears to hint at one coming soon with Mexican pop icon Gloria Trevi. Jhonny and Eduin pretend to flip their hair in a nod to one of Trevi’s classic songs.

“I’m so excited that we collaborated with one of the biggest LGBTQ+ icons,” Jhonny says. “She’s an ally to the community who I really admire.” He then imitates Trevi’s voice and adds, “I want to go around with mi pelo suelto.”
