Yng Lvcas is putting reggaeton from Mexico on the map. The rising Mexican star has one of the biggest hits of the year with the “La Bebe” remix featuring Peso Pluma. Now, Yng Lvcas is using his debut album Super Estrellas, released today (Oct. 13), to highlight more of el movimiento in his home country. In an interview with Remezcla, he talked about his new LP, collaborating with Mexico’s reggaeton artists, and going international.

“I’m happy,” Yng Lvcas tells Remezcla. “I’m thankful. I believe, right now, I’m at a good point in my life. I’m representing Mexico, and that’s enough for me.”

Before becoming Yng Lvcas, he was born Daniel Oswaldo Donlucas Martínez in Guadalajara. He grew up on the music of regional Mexican acts like Banda El Recodo, Ariel Camacho, and Gerardo Ortiz. Yng Lvcas considered exploring that genre, but he knew that Natanael Cano, Junior H, and Fuerza Regida had already taken that lane. When he asked people who their favorite Mexican reggaeton artist was, he notes that no one could name one person.

“I was like, ‘Oh man, this is it!’” Yng Lvcas recalls. “I was being a businessman. I was like, ‘We don’t have this, so we need to work right now to do this.’ Reggaeton wasn’t made here before like it is now. I didn’t have that reference, so I invented my reggaeton and the people like it.”

As Yng Lvcas was signing a record contract with Warner earlier this year, Peso Pluma reached out to him to do his first reggaeton song. They worked together on a remix of “La Bebe.” Their collaboration climbed to No. 11 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, while the music video has amassed over 602 million views.

“He told me he liked the song, and we did the remix,” Yng Lvcas says. “We drank Hennessy. We smoked some blunts, and we wrote the song. The remix has shot to the sky.”

While Yng Lvcas could be using his momentum to focus on furthering his own career, he wants to “give a hand” to the other Mexican reggaetoneros. His Super Estrellas album features 17 artists from across the country. El Bogueto and El Malilla, who are Mexico’s top reggaeton artists in his eyes, feature on the alluring “Perreando Triste” with Uzielito Mix. Yng Lvcas also highlights the women in the genre like Mont Pantoja, Ingratax, Lexy Walter, Akasha, and Emjay in the fierce “Cypher Morras.”

Right now is the moment to create Mexican reggaeton. But real Mexican reggaeton, so that in 10 years, we’ll have our Anuel AA, our Arcángel, or our Daddy Yankee.”

“All of us on the album are superstars,” he says. “In this album, I want to show the world our unity, effort, and hunger. Right now is the moment to create Mexican reggaeton. But real Mexican reggaeton, so that in 10 years, we’ll have our Anuel AA, our Arcángel, or our Daddy Yankee.”

In the meanwhile, Yng Lvcas is also going international with his music. After David Guetta remixed “La Bebe,” he worked on new music with producers like Marshmello, Dímelo Flow, and Full Harmony, the person behind Myke Towers’ monster hit “Lala.”

Mexico has arrived, and no one is going to take that away from us,” he says. “I’m here to work hard and I’m here to make history.”
