Though the long-awaited third season of Euphoria is finally in production, not all of the beloved characters are set to return. Barbie Ferreira recently set the record straight (and for what hopefully is the last time) about the truth behind her departure following the last season.
Ferreira, who is of Brazilian descent, played Katherine “Kat” Hernandez on the first two seasons of Euphoria. Her character harnessed the power of body positivity to live just as adventurous as her castmates, which included Zendaya, Alex Demie, Jacob Elordi, and the late Angus Cloud. Back in August 2022, Ferreira revealed that her character was not returning for season three. There were rumors that behind-the-scenes friction led to her walking off set. She recently cleared the air about her departure on The Viall Files podcast.
“I never walked off set,” Ferreira explained. “There was never anything like that. That was like a whole thing. I absolutely never did that. You could ask the hundreds of people that were there every day.”
After dispelling that rumor, Ferreira opened up about her relationship with Kat today and why she believes the character was written off the show. She believes she and Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, saw eye to eye on her departure.

“It wasn’t just my choice,” Ferreira said. “I think after having a lot of conversation and after season two, there was just nowhere to go. Instead of me lingering around for nine months, it was best for both of us that we just kind of ended it there. Kat means the world to me. I spent so many years pouring everything into her, but you don’t wanna ruin a good thing. It was a mutual decision. It was absolutely not just me.”
Though Ferreira’s Kat sadly won’t return for the third season, she added that she still keeps in touch with her ex-castmates. She has since turned her attention to Broadway. Many of them were in attendance to see her star in the play Cult of Love.
“I saw Hunter [Schafer] the other day, I saw Maude [Apatow] the other day, Sydney [Sweeney] came to see my play,” Ferreira said. “So I mean they’re all so busy. I mean, I’ve been out of town for, like, eight months so I’m like, whoever is in town, we always try to see each other and they came to support the play, which was really sweet.”
