Did MKY Make the Top 24 on ‘American Idol’ Season 23?

AMERICAN IDOL – “808 (Head to Head)” – The competition heats up as competitors face off in intense head-to-head battles, and this season’s new artist in residence, Jelly Roll, makes his highly anticipated debut. MONDAY, APRIL 7 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Eric McCandless) MKY, JOSH KING
MKY fought for a place in the coveted Top 24 on American Idol last night (April 7). The Chicano crooner took on fellow contestant Josh King in a duet to a Stephen Sanchez hit.
MKY has become one to watch on season 23 of American Idol. The East L.A. native went viral over the weekend during the Hollywood Week: Showstopper episode when he sang the beloved bolero “Sabor a Mí.” The song was originally written by Álvaro Carrillo and MKY covered Luis Miguel’s version of it. While paying homage to his Mexican roots, he also played the guitar during his dreamy performance.
Last night (April 7) was a continuation of Hollywood Week in the brand new Head to Head round. After four singers were guaranteed to move forward into the Top 24, that left MKY and 41 other contestants to battle it out in duets for the remaining spots. MKY was paired up with King.
For their Head to Head duet, MKY and King covered the doo wop-inspired smash “Until I Found You” by Sanchez. The song was definitely more in MKY’s retro heartthrob lane, but King also sounded great. The latter pulled out a harmonica as well and played it during the performance. Judge Luke Bryan joined them onstage and joked, “I want to be a Righteous Brother.”

Most of the Head to Head duets resulted in one person from each pair getting sent home. MKY and King beat the odds with both of them moving forward to the Top 24. Going forward, fans will now be able to vote for their favorite contestants and determine who moves on in the competition. If you’re a fan of MKY, don’t forget to vote for him in the upcoming live performance rounds.
During his audition, MKY revealed that he comes from a family of musicians, including his great uncle Little Ray and his late grandfather Mike Jimenez of Tierra. Now he has a chance to make his mark in music as the possible next American Idol.
American Idol airs on Sunday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
