Here’s How to Watch the Spanish Dub of ‘Wicked’ in the U.S.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in Wicked

There’s a way for Spanish speakers to enjoy the Wicked movie in Spanish in the U.S. Through the power of TheaterEars, people can listen to Danna and Ceci de la Cueva’s Spanish-language voiceovers and vocal performances.

Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of Wicked opened in theaters in the U.S. with stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. But in screenings of the movie in Latin America, Mexican pop star Danna does the voiceover for Elphaba and de la Cueva does the voiceover for Glinda. Back in 2013, Danna and de la Cueva performed as those respective characters in Mexico City’s live production of the musical. With the TheaterEars app, it’s now possible to listen to both Mexican actresses’ voiceover work in the U.S.

“To capture the essence of their performance for Spanish speaking audiences, the producers of Wicked brought in two of the top talents in the world with Danna and Ceci de la Cueva,” Dan Magru, CEO of TheaterEars, shares exclusively with Remezcla. “Their voices beam across the room with a unique joy and enthusiasm. While they both were true to the original performances on the film, Danna and Ceci each brought their own personalities to their roles that only enhanced the quality of this great film.”

To listen to the Spanish dub of Wicked, moviegoers can download the TheaterEars app for free. After selecting Wicked from the list of films, you need to bring your headphones with you to the theater. While watching the movie with the app on, the Spanish dub will automatically play in-sync in your headphones with the action on the big screen. “We are so honored to bring Spanish speaking audiences the magic of Wicked with the TheaterEars app,” Magru adds. “Language should never be a barrier when it comes to moviegoing. We’ve seen so many people come together at the movies with TheaterEars, everything from family movie nights, first dates, and friends getting together, all made possible with the app.”

In the Spanish dub of Wicked, Danna and de La Cueva can be heard belting out the Spanish-language versions of songs like “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.” During the musical’s run in Mexico City, Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist for Wicked, complimented Danna’s performances.
