Freddie Prinze Jr. is making his way back to I Know What You Did Last Summer. According to Deadline, the actor is reprising his role as Ray from the OG 1997 movie in the upcoming sequel from Sony. There have been no updates on final girl Jennifer Love Hewitt to make her return, with last reports saying that they were in negotiations to see her return as Julie. Thor: Love and Thunder co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing the movie.

While Sony had no comment on plans for a sequel, it’s probably safe to assume the studio saw how profitable Paramount Pictures’ relaunch of Scream was with the release of last year’s fifth installment of the horror franchise, which is expanding to Scream VI next month.

According to Deadline’s insiders, the new IKWYDLS sequel would do what 2022’s Scream did and bring back legacy cast members like Prinze Jr. and Hewitt, while also introducing audiences to a new cast of characters that include Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. Original cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette reprised their roles in last year’s Scream and passed the torch to actresses Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega.

Deadline is also reporting that Sony liked what Robinson did as a director with her last film, Netflix’s Do Revenge, which it described as a sort of throwback to films like 1999’s Cruel Intentions. It’s apparently the darkly comedic tone the studio is looking for when another IKWYDLS sequel goes into production.

In the original 1997 slasher flick IKWYDLS, a group of four friends accidentally hit a man with their car and decide to cover up the accident. A year later, the foursome is stalked by a killer who is dispatching his victims with a large fisherman’s hook, with Hewitt playing the heroic lead and Prinze Jr. as her boyfriend.

The original film was followed by two sequels – 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which included Prinze Jr. and Hewitt; and 2006’s I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, a direct-to-video movie that introduced a new cast. Also, in 2021, a TV series titled I Know What You Did Last Summer followed a new set of teens suffering the consequences of a hit-and-run with a twist.

The sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, which will now include Freddie Prinze Jr., is reportedly set to be released on July 18, 2025.
