Buzz for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been steadily growing since the first trailer showcased the debut of Jenna Ortega in the series and the return of Michael Keaton as the titular ghost with the most. But the latest trailer to release for the movie finally gives fans a better look at how Ortega’s Astrid Deetz will be the new focus of the sequel.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice follows Astrid, the daughter of Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), after she’s taken (at least from what we assume from the trailer) hostage in the afterlife, forcing her mother to summon Beetlejuice once again to help bring her back. Though the trailer offers hefty doses of nostalgia, Ortega’s Astrid reminds viewers that things aren’t all the same.

The trailer opens with Astrid acting every bit as morbid as her mother as she taunts bullies in her school who try to play a prank on her while also being embarrassed by her mother. Audiences quickly learn that while Lydia has always been a goth icon, Astrid is not, opting to believe in cold, hard facts, and dismissing the presence of ghosts. In a notable detail, she also has Lydia listed as “Alleged Mom” on her phone before she rejects the call.

What follows expands on the previous trailer, where Astrid is trapped in the afterlife. There, she is taken to areas audiences never saw in the first movie, like a ghostly train station or a church. Throughout her ordeal, a mystery also unravels as she’s shown wearing a wedding dress for an unknown groom who we can’t help but feel is Beetlejuice again.

Later in the trailer, Ortega’s Astrid is also shown with her mother in the same desert where the sandworms from the first movie live. Following that, Ortega also has a brief musical number alongside Catherine O’Hara’s Delia Deetz while sitting on a church pew in said wedding dress.

The latest Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer showcases how Ortega’s character will homage to classic moments from the franchise. But on top of that, Astrid Deetz also shines by bringing a fun twist to an archetype pioneered by Lydia Deetz.

See Jenna Ortega in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice only in theaters on September 6, 2024.
