In a new series, John Leguizamo will step into the shoes of one of Colombia’s most controversial drug lords. The Colombian-American star inhabits the role of Pablo Escobar Gaviria in the trailer for the upcoming Dear Killer Nannies.

Throughout his career in film, Leguizamo is known for starring in comedies like To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and action adventure flicks like 1993’s Super Mario Bros of Violent Night. It’s not to say that he has done serious roles before like his breakthrough in crime drama Carlito’s Way, but playing Escobar Gaviria is a surprising new turn for Leguizamo.

Escobar Gaviria was notorious in the eighties and nineties for drug trafficking in Colombia as the “King of Cocaine.” His criminal empire came to an end when he was killed in a shootout with Colombian special forces in December 1993.

Hulu’s Dear Killer Nannies is Escobar Gaviria’s story told through the eyes of his son Juan Pablo “Juampi” Escobar Henao. While growing up within his father’s life of crime, Juampi saw hitmen as his nannies. In the series, he will be played by Janer Villareal, Miguel Tamayo, and Miguel Ángel García through various stages of his life.

In the trailer for Dear Killer Nannies, Leguizamo embodies the ruthlessness of Escobar Gaviria while also portraying his fatherly side with Juampi. Laura Rodríguez will play Juampi’s mother Victoria Henao. The series also stars Andrés Delgado and Carmen Electra.

Dear Killer Nannies will start streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for U.S. bundle subscribers on April 1.
