After a contestant was injured during a taping of Miss Universe Latina, El Reality, she is opening up about her recovery process. The show has also issued a response about Laura Pérez’s fall.

During the taping of Miss Universe Latina, El Reality on July 20, Pérez suffered a fall while competing in the final challenge. The contestants were tasked to walk across a raised platform and be photographed jumping for a crown floating above the stage. The Cuban hopeful jumped off the platform and fell directly onto the main stage. The challenge was ultimately canceled afterwards.

During last night’s finale, host Jacky Bracamontes revealed that Pérez sprained her ankle from the fall. She ended up coming in third place in the competition. On her Instagram account, Pérez shared an update on her health. In the video, she can be seen in a wheelchair looking like a beauty queen with a bouquet of flowers. Pérez gave a shout out to her supporters in Cuba and Latin America.

“Thank you to all the people who prayed for me and all those who voted for me every day,” Pérez wrote. “I could feel it from here. I’ll be doing physical therapy for a few more days until I’m discharged, but I’ll be with you soon.”

After Pérez’s fall, some fans called the show negligent for the dangerous challenge that seemingly had nothing to do with a beauty queen’s usual duties. In a statement, Telemundo called the incident an “unfortunate accident.” The TV station added that it’s currently investigating the circumstances of Pérez’s fall and that the safety and wellbeing of their talent is their “top priority.”
