After becoming a breakout star on American Idol, MKY’s journey on the show has come to an end. The Chicano singer was shockingly voted off during last night’s (April 20) episode.
MKY went viral earlier this month for his performance during the Hollywood Week: Showstopper episode. With his guitar in-hand he covered the classic “Sabor a Mí,” which was written by Álvaro Carrillo. MKY put a fresh spin on Luis Miguel’s version of the song. The judges moved him forward to the Top 24 group.
Last week, the Top 24 traveled to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii in the first round that was voted on by the public. During the April 13 episode, MKY performed a smooth rendition of “Adorn” by Mexican-American singer Miguel. The contestants found out during last night’s Easter episode who moved onto the Top 20.
MKY apparently didn’t garner enough votes and he was eliminated from the competition. Grayson Torrence, Kyana Fanene, and Penny Samar also didn’t advance to the next round. In an emotional post on Instagram, MKY opened up about his incredible run on American Idol.

“I’ll forever cherish these moments, memories & friends I’ve made on this journey and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to sing and represent LOS ÁNGELES on the national stage,” he wrote. “Although my journey is now official over on @americanidol I’d like to welcome and embrace all the new love and supporters I’ve gained recently! Be ready because this is just the beginning. EL TIEMPO DE DIOS ES EL TIEMPO PERFECTO.”
During his audition, MKY revealed that he comes from a family of musicians, including his great uncle Little Ray and his late grandfather Mike Jimenez of Tierra. MKY will continue on his career as an independent artist. Last year, he released the singles “Save Me” and “Let Me.”
