Omar Apollo will soon make his acting debut. The Mexican-American pop star revealed that he will appear in the upcoming Luca Guadagnino movie Queer.

Apollo is most known for his career as a musician. Though he had always hinted at being gay in songs, it was in his 2022 debut album Ivory where he was the most open about his sexuality. That LP also earned Apollo first hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Evergreen.” A year later,  he was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards. After making a splash in music, the next frontier for Apollo is the movies.

In a post on X, Apollo revealed that he will appear in the movie Queer. The film was directed by Guadagnino, who was at the helm of this year’s box office hit Challengers. Queer will be set in Mexico City in the 1940s with James Bond star Daniel Craig playing an American expat and war veteran who starts a romance with a younger man, played by Drew Starkey.

“first movie with Luca, wow hot ass cast,” Apollo wrote in his post. According to IndieWire, Apollo was cast in a “top-billed role” in the movie.

Queer will premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival next month. The movie will also compete for a Golden Lion award. There’s no word yet on when to expect a wider release for the film. In addition to Apollo, the movie’s cast will also include Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henry Zaga, and Lisandro Alonso.

Last month, Apollo released his second album God Said No. The LP features his recent hits like “Spite,” “Less of You,” “Done With You,” and a surprise cameo from Pedro Pascal. On July 15, Apollo kicked off his God Said No World Tour in Melbourne, Australia. The tour will touch down in the U.S. on Aug. 20 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
