Nominations for the 75th Annual Emmy Awards were announced Wednesday morning (July 12) and there were a handful of Emmy-nominated Latine actors who got well-deserved nods.
The nominations dropped on the same day that a deadline will expire between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) to reach an agreement on the WGA’s strike demands.
Via livestream, Emmy-nominated actress Yvette Nicole Brown (The Black Lady Sketch Show) and Television Academy Chair Frank Scherma, read the nominations, which included Pedro Pascal, Jenna Ortega, Aubrey Plaza, and more.
First, Pascal received three nominations – one for Outstanding Lead Actor (Drama) in the HBO series The Last of Us, another for Outstanding Guest Actor (Comedy) for hosting an episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL) earlier this year, and Outstanding Narrator for CNN’s Patagonia: Life On The Edge Of The World. These are Pascal’s first Emmy nominations of his career.
In total, The Last of Us received 24 nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. Another Latine-led show that will be competing against it is Disney+’s Andor starring Diego Luna.
Ortega landed her very first Emmy nomination of her career for Outstanding Lead Actress (Comedy) for her role as the title character in Netflix’s Wednesday, which earned 12 total nominations, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series. This nomination makes her the third — and youngest — Latina to receive the nod.
The Latine representation in nominations didn’t stop there. Aubrey Plaza’s first-ever nomination came for Outstanding Supporting Actress (Drama) for her role in the second season of HBO’s The White Lotus. Camila Morrone earned a nod in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Or Anthology Series or Movie category for her role in Daisy Jones & the Six. Nathalie Emmanuel landed a nom in the Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category for her role in Die Hart 2: Die Harter. And Kid Cudi’s Entergalactic scored a nomination for Outstanding Animated Program.
A nomination for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking was also given to National Geographic’s The Territory, which tells a story about a land dispute between Brazilian farmers and the indigenous community.
These nominations are a small step up from the lack of representation for our communities last year. The 2022 Emmy nominations left a lot to be desired as only two Latino men were nominated in an acting category — Oscar Isaac for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series Movie for his role in HBO Max’s Scenes from a Marriage; and Colman Domingo for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Euphoria.
