Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve), a movie with an all-Latine cast and spoken entirely in Uruguayan Spanish, has broken Netflix records to become the second most-watched non-English language movie on the platform. But despite the movie’s two nominations at the Oscars this year, the movie walked away empty-handed from the Academy Awards.

And the internet was very, very upset about that fact. And when the internet gets upset, it gets funny. Particularly in the Latin American side of the internet.

The angry gif game was strong, let’s just say that.

There were memes, like this one mocking a very famous Oscar mistake.

And fanvids.

Some even said that the movie didn’t win at the 2024 Oscars because it wasn’t a “big” Hollywood production.

There were even Oppenheimer videos used to underscore how upset some people were at the Society of the Snow “snubs.”

And people were especially upset that the category had Bad Bunny presenting – in Spanish, no less! – for the winner to then be The Zone of Interest.

In the end, people just really loved Society of the Snow, and they didn’t understand how it didn’t win.

The movie is based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci. It tells the story of the crash of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes in 1972. Of the 45 passengers in that plane, 16 of them survived 72 days and were finally rescued after two of them – Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado climbed 15,260 feet and walked for approximately 38 miles and 10 days to seek help.
