We’ve got a date for the last movie in the Spider-Verse trilogy. Yes, the last. And though there’s still a long wait ahead of us for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, we’ve seen enough to know it’ll be worth the wait. And we’ve got the first-look images to prove it.
Sony announced at CinemaCon that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released June 18, 2027. The movie is reportedly being made with IMAX in mind. It picks up right after 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which saw Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) discover that a parallel version of himself had turned into the evil Prowler in a different version of Earth, one without Spider-Man.
Now, Miles is trapped in this new reality where uncle Aaron is alive, his father is dead and he is a villain…all while the Spot is getting ready to kill his father, back on his own Earth. And the first look images show Miles connecting with his father, Spider-Man 20299 attacking what looks like Miles, Spider-Punk, and then Miles uncle and what honestly looks like a younger version of Miles father.
What’s next? Well, Miles must find his way home and figure out if being Spider-Man is worth it, all while trying to protect his family. Big task.
The first two movies in the trilogy have been very successful, not just with audiences but with critics too. The 2018 movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, won the Animated Feature Oscar, while the follow up Across the Spider-Verse was once again nominated. In total, both movies have grossed $1.08 billion and have been very popular on streaming.
Miles Morales is a comic book superhero originally conceived as a modern reimagining of Spider-Man. The character was created in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, and debuted in Ultimate Comics: Fallout #4. As one of the only Latine characters in the Marvel universe, Morales has been a favorite from his inception and there has even been talk about the character making the jump to live-action, though that has yet to materialize.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson and written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham.
