On Friday morning (January 6), Netflix released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming YA comedy series Freeridge, a spinoff to the critically acclaimed show On My Block, which ran for four seasons on the streamer.

Named after the inner-city neighborhood in Los Angeles where the teenage characters live, Freeridge follows the adventures of Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia), Ines (Bryana Salaz), Cam (Tenzing Norgay Trainor), and Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson), the “new core four” at Freeridge High School. Netflix describes Freeridge as “a coming-of-age comedy” featuring a group of friends that “unleashed a curse bringing dark misfortune into their lives.”

In the teaser, the foursome brings a “curse box” to someone they think can help them. “We bought this curse box, and now we’re cursed because of it,” Demi says.

The young woman they think can help responds: “Sorry, I don’t do curses.” She does, however, let the friends know that she senses a “dark energy” around them.

Later, Gloria is petrified when she sees that someone has written the words, “I want my box, bitch” on a window at her house. Others like Cam don’t seem too worried about it. He’s in love with Demi and tells her that they should move past the bad juju and “focus on us.”

In one scene, Ines tells her sister Gloria, who she seems to have a violent sibling rivalry with, that she’s the “GOAT of solving things.” It’s a comment Gloria takes as a compliment because she believes “GOAT” means “Greatest of All Time.” It doesn’t. “No, like a goat goat,” Ines explains. “When you get something in front of you, you just chew the hell out of it.”

Will the “new core four” stick together and figure out how to rid themselves of the curse? We’ll find out when Freeridge premieres on Netflix on February 2, 2023.
